ODES AND EPISODES is a piece for solo electric guitar with digital delay pedals by Chris Best that explores form and meaning as an on-going evolution of the original composition process, rather than as a mere interpretation of a fixed output. The material is all pre-defined; the work is not an improvisation, but the options for revealing that material remain in constant flux. No two performances can be the same – each becomes unique, yet all have equal status. The set material (rigorously laid down in the score) thus serves as the skeleton or DNA of the piece, while each performance gives birth to a new outer skin and a fresh personality.
